Okay, fine...
The list has been added to the bottom of the page. I couldn't stand the not knowing.
I will watch one a week, depending on what Netflix sends, but staying relatively in order. And then I will post about the experience. Aren't you all excited? :)
The first viewing will be next Tuesday. Hoping to do Monty Python, but netflix has not told me I can expect to see it. I will announce what I'm watching the day before.

before i post the list...
I just gotta say... there were many more complications than I expected. 2 of them, in fact.
1) I watched the poll results pretty closely... and about 2 days before the end of the poll, one of the movies started gaining many more votes than it had previously. I happen to work at a place where we do internet polling with our sites... and I was talking with a couple guys from work about this (one of them had brought it up with me earlier, due to a conversation he had with a friend who also noticed this... in fact, it was due to this conversation that I started paying more attention). One of the guys who actually pays attention to polling trends as a part of his job, suggested that the reason behind this was the someone made a post or sent an email somewhere along the way that said "go here and vote for ____".
I think they missed the point.
Anyway, after a lot of thought and discussion, I have decided to leave it alone. What it comes down to is that, frankly, I'm too lazy to put a bunch of work into making another poll, getting people to come vote for it, tallying everything up again... especially when, more than likely, I would get the same results. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.. no puppies will die from the possibility of this poll being compromised.
2) I had a 4-way tie for 48th, 49th, and 50th places. I really should have anticipated this one. but I didn't. I made another poll in my personal blog, and got it narrowed down to two movies for 50th... But then what? should I have yet another poll? when they seem to be going so well? I debated flipping coins, rolling dice, darts... and came to the conclusion that, again, it really doesn't matter that much, and I am lazy. So, there will be a total of 51 movies. I'm still calling this the top 50 list though. 51 sounds unnatural.. and a little odd (don't think about that one too hard- it's really not worth it).
So, the next post will have the top 50 list. Are you all as excited as I am? Ooooh! When will that list get posted? tomorrow? over the weekend? Who knows?
Not me, that's for sure.

Building a poll.
Okay. It's been decided that I simply do not watch enough movies. it's not that I don't enjoy movies, but I hate feeling unproductive, and I would rather wax philosophical over a cup of coffee on a date than watch a movie where there is absolutely NO social interaction.
But my strong anti-movie stance is faltering... when I have conversations with friends, I can't join. I simply don't know what the hell people are talking about. People quote movies, and I have no clue where it comes from. Jokes are made at improv shows that reference movies, and I'm the only one in the audience NOT laughing.
I need to dip my toe into that pop culture thing the kids have been talking about.
I have made the decision that I will set aside time to watch movies. I need your help in this endeavor. I have no ideas what movies to watch. I mean, if I am doing this so that I can actually join the pop culture craze, I need to watch the movies that people reference and talk about. I do not need a list of the best movies, or the movies I would most enjoy. I need to compile a list of the movies that most influence our culture.
Since I will watch a movie a week, I think I need a list of 50 movies. Leave a comment here with your list of culturally influential movies. You don't have to leave 50.. if you can only think of 10, leave 10. If you think of more than 50, then leave them. I will be collecting titles from other sources as well, and when I have all the suggested titles pooled together, I will create a poll to vote on them.
But first I need titles for movies that have affected our culture. Movies that are commonly quoted, movies that are used in philosophical debates, movies that "everyone has seen" that are commonly referenced.
Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.
